Bearcats Fall in Overtime at Truman
KIRKSVILLE, Mo.-Gentry Dietz and Abby Henry became the first Bearcat duo since Meghan Brue and Jessica Burton last season to each score 20 or more in a game but it was not enough as Northwest Missouri State lost Wednesday evening 99-91 at Truman State in overtime.
Dietz scored 30 points and hauled down eight rebounds, despite sitting the final 10 minutes of the first-half in foul trouble. While Henry scored 28, had six rebounds and dished out five assists in the loss. Shelly Martin had 11 points and shot 3-for-5 from three-point range.
The Bearcats forced overtime in thrilling fashion. Trailing by six with 47 seconds remaining Henry nailed a quick lay-up and after a missed Bulldog free-throw Shelly Martin cut the lead to one after hitting a three ball. Truman hit two free-throws to lead 85-82. Gabby Curtis would drain a three with 19 seconds remaining to tie the game and Ashley Thayer forced OT with a steal to end regulation. But Northwest would shoot just 3-of-9 in the extra frame as Truman pulled away at the end.
Northwest led by as many as 11 points in the opening half and led at halftime 47-37. This becomes the Bearcats' third loss in the last four games where Northwest has held a halftime advantage.
Northwest shot 45 percent from the field but went just 4-of-6 from the free-throw line while Truman hit 24-of-29 (83 percent) and shot 50 percent from the floor. The Bearcats forced six more turnovers in the ballgame put were out-rebounded 49-39. Northwest had 20 assists in the loss, the Bearcats' second consecutive game with 20 or more assists.
Northwest (12-12, 8-9 MIAA) will host Central Missouri Saturday afternoon in Bearcat Arena. Northwest survived a late Jennies' rally to hold onto a 25-point halftime lead to win 80-67 back in January. Henry led the Bearcats with 27 points and Dietz had 19 points and 13 rebounds.
