Martin Nets Career-High 23 in Loss at No. 15 Washburn
TOPEKA, Kan.-Cold shooting in the first half proved to be costly for the Bearcats as Northwest Missouri State fell Wednesday night at No. 15 Washburn 80-63. Shelly Martin led the Bearcats with a career-high 23 points. Martin was 8-for-10 from the floor and hit 6-of-6 from three-point range.
Abby Henry had 19 points for the Bearcats, snapping her four-game streak of scoring 25 or more. Henry also added a career-high five steals and had five assists. Gentry Dietz recorded another double-double hauling down 10 rebounds to go along with 10 points.
Northwest struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, hitting just 6-of-34 (17.6 percent) and found themselves trailing at the half 18-38. Washburn shot just under 52 percent from the field in the half. Northwest heated things up in the second half hitting 7-of-9 three-point attempts, thanks in large part to Martin. The Bearcats cut the Washburn lead down to 54-47 with 8:49 remaining, but that would be as close as the Bearcats would get as Washburn would work the lead back up to 20 with just under a minute remaining.
For the game Northwest shot 31 percent while turning the ball over 18 times. The Bearcats out-rebounded Washburn 45-37 in the loss and hit 15-of-21 from the free-throw line.
Northwest (10-9, 6-6 MIAA) will return home on Saturday to face Fort Hays State at 1:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena. Northwest lost to Hays back on Dec. 9, 66-76. Dietz had a career-high 28 points and 12 rebounds in that game.
