Henry Scores 27 as Northwest Wins Fourth Straight
JOPLIN, Mo.-Abby Henry continued her hot streak Wednesday night as Northwest Missouri State defeated Missouri Southern 75-67 in Joplin, Mo., to win its fourth straight game. Henry tied a career-high by pouring in 27 points for the second time in three games. Henry who hit 10-of-11 from the free-throw line has scored 25 or more in three consecutive games. It's the first time a Bearcat has accomplished that since Mandi Schumacher did it in 2007-08. Northwest has also won four straight MIAA games for the first time since the '07-'08 season.
Shelly Martin had 16 points and three steals for Northwest. Gabby Curtis, Ashley Thayer and Alexis Boeh each chipped in with eight points. Leading scorer Gentry Dietz played just 19 minutes in the game due to foul trouble and scored four points, her season-low.
Missouri Southern led by as many as seven points, twice in the first half. However, Northwest would go on a 23-9 run to end the last 10 minutes of the half, giving them a 35-28 advantage at the break, and wouldn't relinquish the lead from there on. Missouri Southern kept it within single-digits for much of the second-half, with Northwest's biggest advantage coming with 3:20 left in the game when they led by 13.
Both teams shot 39 percent from the field, with Southern hitting eight three-pointers to Northwest's five. However, the difference came at the charity stripe, where the Bearcats went 30-for-36, while Missouri Southern hit 15-of-25. The Bearcats also forced 31 turnovers, scoring 30 points off of Lion miscues.
Northwest (10-7, 6-4 MIAA) begins the second-half of MIAA play on Sunday, Jan. 24 at No. 6 Emporia State at 1:30 p.m. The Bearcats upset then-No. 5 Emporia State 88-76 in the conference opener back in December.
