Northwest Holds on For Victory Over Central Missouri
WARRENSBURG, Mo.-Abby Henry scored a career-high 27 points on 7-of-10 shooting and had a career-best nine rebounds to help Northwest Missouri State hold onto a 80-67 victory Wednesday night over Central Missouri in Warrensburg. It was Northwest's first win in Warrensburg since 2004.
Gentry Dietz had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Bearcats, while Shelly Martin chipped in with 10 points and four assists. Gabby Curtis scored nine points, leaving her just three shy of 1,000 for her career. Curtis also added four steals, four rebounds and three assists.
Northwest played great in the opening stanza shooting 50 percent from the field including 5-of-8 from three-point range. With 9:33 left in the opening half the two teams were tied at 17 apiece. Northwest would then go on a 30-5 run to end the half to take a 47-22 advantage into the locker room.
The second half wasn't as smooth for the Bearcats as they shot just 6-for-26 from the floor as Central Missouri cut the lead down to 70-65 with just over three minutes to go. However Curtis and Henry would ice the game away by hitting 10 free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory for the Bearcats.
Northwest shot 47 percent from beyond the arc, while limiting Central to 19 percent on 6-of-31 from three-point land. The Bearcats forced six more turnovers and went 30-37 (81 percent) from the free-throw line, while the Jennies went 19-of-31.
Northwest (8-7, 4-4 MIAA) will next host Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon in Bearcat Arena. Tip is at 1:30 p.m. with the men to follow.
