Martin's Three at the Buzzer Beats Truman
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State guard Shelly Martin scored a career-high 18 points, including a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to give the Bearcats a 68-65 win against Truman Saturday at Bearcat Arena.
The win stops a three-game skid for the Bearcats (7-7, 3-4 MIAA). The Bulldogs (6-9, 1-7) have lost five in a row.
Martin tied the game at 65 with a three-pointer with 1:25 remaining that completed a nine-point comeback by the Bearcats. Truman held a 59-50 lead with six minutes left to play.
Truman gained possession with 23 seconds left and worked to take the last shot with the game still tied at 65. But Amy Galey's jumper in the lane fell short and Northwest guard Abby Henry took the rebound with eight seconds remaining. Henry drove past half court and into the lane before finding Martin alone in the right corner for the winner. Martin finished 4-of-5 from behind the arc.
Northwest played without top scorer and rebounder Gentry Dietz, who was attending a funeral. Truman finished with a 39-29 edge on the boards. Breanna Daniels led the Bulldogs with 14 points and five boards. Laura Joya had 13 points and five rebounds off Truman's bench.
The Bearcats led by 10 in the first half and took a 34-29 lead into the break. Truman used a 19-6 run midway through the second half to take its nine-point lead.
Henry and Gabby Curtis had 12 points each for Northwest. Curtis is 12 points shy of 1,000 for her collegiate career.
