Bearcats Drop First MIAA Game of the Season
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Abby Henry scored 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting but it was not enough as Northwest Missouri State was defeated by No. 15 Washburn 54-67 Saturday afternoon inside Bearcat Arena. The loss gives Northwest its first MIAA loss of the season.
Gentry Dietz had 14 points for the Bearcats and Shelly Martin chipped in with six. Washburn took advantage of its size advantage as they out-rebounded the Bearcats 47-25, had 20 second-chance points and had 36 points in the paint to Northwest's 22. The Bearcats struggled from the floor shooting 33 percent for the game and committed 18 turnovers.
Washburn jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but Northwest clawed its way back to within two at 14-16 at the 7:20 mark in the first half. The Lady Blues would go on a 18-to-7 run to end the half and led 34-21 at the half. Washburn had a 16-point lead to open the 2nd-half but Northwest would fight back again cutting the lead down to nine at 34-43 with just under 14 minutes remaining. However, that would be as close as the Bearcats would get as Washburn lengthened their lead with the help of 48 percent shooting in the second half and closed out the victory.
Northwest (5-3, 1-1 MIAA) will play again Dec. 9 at Fort Hays State as the Bearcats play their first MIAA road game of the season.
