Bearcats Upset No. 5 Emporia State to Open MIAA Play

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Gentry Dietz scored 20 points to lead four Bearcats in double-figures as Northwest Missouri State defeated No. 5 Emporia State 88-76 Wednesday night in Bearcat Arena. It was Northwest's first victory over Emporia State since 2003 and first win over a top-five ranked team since Jan. of 2008.

Dietz would also haul in six rebounds and had three blocks in the game. Gabby Curtis recovered from a slow start to finish with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win. Emily Hauder scored a career-high 14 points for the Bearcats and had a game-high nine rebounds, also a career-best.

Emporia State would get off to a cold start from the field as Northwest would lead by as many as 12 in the first half. However, Emporia would go on an 18 to 6 run later in the half to tie the game at 26-26. Curtis then hit back-to-back three-pointers to help Northwest on an 11-5 run to end the first half at 37-31.

The Bearcats came out on fire in the second half and went on an early 18-2 run to begin the half and would lead by as many as 22 points in the 2nd. Northwest hit 48 percent in the second half from the floor. The Bearcats would hold off a late Emporia State run as the Lady Hornets cut the Northwest lead down to eight at 78-70 with just under two minutes remaining in the game. That would be as close as Emporia would get as free throws down the stretch would ice the game for the Bearcat upset.

Northwest shot 43 percent from the field in the game and went 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Bearcats also had twice as many fast break points and 10 more points in the paint as Emporia State, while holding the Lady Hornets to a season-low 37 percent shooting.

Northwest (5-2, 1-0 MIAA) will host No. 15 Washburn on Saturday at noon, with the men to follow at 2:30 p.m. The game times have been changed from their original times to help accommodate the NCAA semifinal football game.
