Bearcats Open MIAA Play Tonight Against Emporia State
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State basketball teams will open MIAA play tonight as the Bearcat women host 5th-ranked and preseason conference favorite Emporia State at 5:30 p.m. Followed by the men facing Emporia at 7:30 inside Bearcat Arena.
Northwest men's Head Coach Ben McCollum was an assistant for Emporia State the last four seasons before coming to Northwest. Northwest (4-0) split a pair of games with Emporia last season, with each team winning at home. Edriss Floyd averaged 6.5 points, three rebounds and three assists per game against the Hornets last season. Elijah Allen had 16 points in the Bearcats' win on Jan. 24.
The Emporia State men were picked to finish third in the MIAA preseason poll by both the coaches and media. Emporia State comes into tonight's contest at 3-2 having lost both of their games to No. 17 Central Oklahoma.
The Bearcat women (4-2) are coming off a pair of losses to CSU-Pueblo and Metro State at the Metro State Thanksgiving Classic last weekend. Northwest is 6-4 under Head Coach Gene Steinmeyer in MIAA home openers.
The Bearcats were swept by Emporia last season, and haven't defeated the Hornets since 2003. Abby Henry averaged six points and two assists off the bench last season against Emporia State, leading all returners in those categories. Emporia State is 5-0 this season and is the two-time defending MIAA regular season champions.
