Henry Scores Career-High 15 in Win Over Missouri-St. Louis
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Gabby Curtis led four Bearcats in double figures with 17 points as Northwest Missouri State defeated Missouri-St. Louis 66-57 Tuesday night inside Bearcat Arena. Curtis also added four rebounds, two assists and a career-high three blocks. Abby Henry scored a career-high 15 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Henry also chipped in with three assists.
Northwest led by as many as 17 in the first half before UMSL cut the lead to 38-27 at halftime. The Bearcats shot just 30 percent in the second half and UMSL cut the lead to within four, three different times. The last came with the score at 57-53 with 4:34 remaining. Curtis and Henry then took over for the Bearcats, scoring the team's final nine points of the ball game.
Northwest recorded a season-high 10 blocks in the win and forced 23 Triton turnovers. Gentry Dietz had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with her 11 points, while Shelly Martin had 10 points, with five rebounds and three steals. Both teams were very even statistically, but the Bearcats made six more foul shots than UMSL. Northwest has attempted and made more foul shots than their opponent in each game this season. The six three pointers hit by the Bearcats and 17 attempted were both season-highs.
Northwest (4-0) is off to their best start since they started the year 4-0 in 2007. The Bearcats will next travel out to Denver, Colo., to the Metro State Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday. Northwest plays CSU-Pueblo at 2 p.m. Maryville time on Friday and will finish the tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. local time against host-Metro State. Associate Head Coach Lori Hopkins coached at Metro State before coming to Northwest in 2002.
