Dietz Scores 25 in Northwest's Season Opener
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Gentry Dietz scored 25 points, 15 of which came in the second half, to lead all scorers in her Bearcat debut, as Northwest Missouri State defeated Upper Iowa 75-64 Sunday in the season opener. Dietz also led Northwest with eight rebounds and went 13-for-15 from the charity stripe.
Gabby Curtis had 13 points as she was also making her debut in a Bearcat uniform. Curtis added five rebounds to go along with two assists. Shelly Martin had 11 points and six rebounds for Northwest, Abby Henry led the squad with four assists.
Northwest shot 34 percent for the game and made 28-of-32 free throws. The Bearcats hit five three point field goals, while Upper Iowa went 1-of-13.
Upper Iowa jumped out to an early four-point lead with 17:42 left in the half, but six different Bearcats would score during a 21-4 run in the next 11 minutes, helping Northwest maintain a double-digit lead for most of the first half, which helped Northwest to a 42-25 lead at the half.
Lana Otting led Upper Iowa with 16 points in the contest, while Cassandra Deiters had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Northwest (1-0) is off until next weekend when the Bearcats will host the Winstead-Reeves Classic Nov. 20 and 21. Northwest will face Missouri Valley Friday night and William Jewell Saturday. Both games will be at 7:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
