Burton Scores 16 in Loss to Fort Hays State
HAYS, Kan. - Jessica Burton led Northwest with 16 points and shot five-of-10 from the field as Northwest Missouri State (6-14, 2-11 MIAA) dropped a 75-60 decision to Fort Hays State (9-10, 5-7 MIAA) tonight in Gross Memorial Coliseum. It's the second straight loss for the Bearcats in Hays, Kan.
Meghan Brue led the Bearcats with seven rebounds and four assists before fouling out with 8:04 remaining. She scored eight points to end an 18-game double-digit scoring streak, the longest for a Bearcat since Denise Sump put together her own 18-game streak in 2000.
Burton's 16 points is a career-best for her in MIAA play. She split her scoring equally between the two halves in her longest performance, 28 minutes, since missing four games with injury earlier this month.
Shelly Martin and Amber Vandevender each scored five of their nine points within the final five minutes. The duo also combined for five assists, three steals and shot six-of-six from the free-throw line.
Erica Biel and Audra Binford each ended with double-doubles for Fort Hays State. The Tigers shot 44 percent from the field and 42 percent from beyond the three-point line.
Up Next: Northwest returns home to host Nebraska-Omaha Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The Mavericks defeated Rockhurst 88-53 earlier today in Omaha, Neb., in nonconference action.
