Bearcats Fall to No. 5 Lady Hornets at Home
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State and Emporia State combined for 50 personal fouls, but only one player fouled out as the Lady Hornets (16-2, 10-1 MIAA) defeated the Bearcats (6-12, 2-9) 104-86 today in Bearcat Arena. Meghan Brue and Rickeya McElroy lead all players with 23 points.
Northwest jumped to an early 7-0 lead to force Emporia State to burn a timeout. The Bearcats held an 11-6 lead with 14:50 remaining in the first half before a nine-point swing for the Lady Hornets left them a 15-11 lead at 13:07. Northwest and Emporia State tied five times later in the half, but the Bearcats could only manage brief one-point leads as they trailed 49-44 to Division II's fifth-ranked team at halftime.
A jumper from Brue 46 seconds into the second half would be the last Northwest field goal until McElroy made a layup with 13:07 remaining to end a 20-3 run by Emporia State.
Abby Henry scored a career-best 10 points and four-of-four shooting from the field. Micaela Uriell scored double-digit points for the third time in the last four games with 10 points today. McElroy and Brue also led Northwest with seven rebounds apiece.
With two blocks, McElroy moved into a tie for fourth in season program records with 31.
Up Next: Northwest welcomes No. 10 Washburn Jan. 28 to cap a three-game homestand. The Lady Blues escaped Omaha, Neb., earlier today with a 64-62 win against the Mavericks.
