Northwest Falls 66-63 to Central Missouri
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Meghan Brue picked up her fifth double-double of the season and seventh of her career with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as Northwest Missouri State (6-9, 2-6 MIAA) dropped a 66-63 decision to Central Missouri (11-4, 6-2 MIAA) tonight in Bearcat Arena. The Bearcats were playing without four players due to injury and illness, including both point guards.
Shelly Martin moved over to handle the point, which allowed Melissa Nyquist to earn her first career start. Martin made a career-best six assists and added another six points and four rebounds.
Both teams shot better than 40 percent in the first half, but the Jennies held a 36-28 advantage at half with six-of-14 shooting from beyond the three-point line.
Central Missouri held an 11-point lead with 15:34 remaining before Northwest scored the next seven points, four from Brue, to close the gap to four points with 13:49 left. Nyquist made the basket on a foul and sank the free throw for a three-point play to bring the game within two points with 8:46 remaining, and a pair of free throws with 53 seconds by Rickeya McElroy brought the game within a point, but Northwest couldn't overcome the early second-half deficit in the 66-63 loss.
Brue reached double-digit points for the 14th straight game and recorded a double-double for the third straight home game. Brue made three steals to move within two of cracking the career top 10 list.
McElroy scored 13 points and made two blocked shots to move into a tie for seventh in all-time season records. She finished one rebound shy of a double-double.
Micaela Uriell scored 15 points for her fifth game with 10 or more points this season.
Up Next: Northwest travels for to Southwest Baptist for a 5:30 p.m. game at Meyer Sports Complex. The purple Bearcats lost on the road tonight at Nebraska-Omaha 85-72.
