Bulldogs Down Bearcats in Overtime
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Abby Henry tied the game with four seconds left to force overtime, but Northwest could never take the lead as Truman picked up its first win of the MIAA season with a 72-68 victory tonight Pershing Arena. It's the first overtime contest in 60 games against the Bulldogs.
Rickeya McElroy scored the first seven points for the Bearcats (6-8, 2-5 MIAA), which kept the game tied through the first media timeout. A jumper from Meghan Brue tied the game again at 9-9 before the Bulldogs (4-11, 1-7 MIAA) went on a 13-2 to take a 22-11 advantage at 9:41.
After falling behind by 12 points with 8:31 remaining, the Bearcats closed it to within a point with a 15-4 run during the next four minutes, 15 seconds. Tara Roach scored four of her seven points during the run off of steals and capped the run with Northwest's only three-pointer of the game. Truman would answer back and carry a 42-34 lead at halftime.
Northwest shot 48 percent from the field in the first half on 14-of-29 shooting, led by McElroy's 15 points on six-of-seven shooting from the field. Neither team missed a free throw in the first half.
The Bearcats opened the second half by scoring the first 11 points and holding the Bulldogs without a field goal through the first five minutes. Northwest would hold a five-point lead with 9:49 remaining before Truman gradually chipped away and took the lead on a jumper from Georgia Mueller with 6:29 remaining.
Northwest would regain the lead again before a pair of free throws from Malorie Kiecker provided a two-point advantage for Truman with 1:37 remaining. Three possessions later, Henry's would drive down the lane unguarded for an easy layup to send the Bearcats to their first overtime game of the season.
Laura Joya's only three-pointer of the game just over a minute into overtime put Truman ahead 65-62, and the Bulldogs would not give up the lead and hold for a 72-68 win.
Roach led all players with a career-high 17 points and recorded a team-best three steals. McElroy finished with 17 points and six rebounds.
Meghan Brue scored 14 points for her 13th straight game with double-digit points. Shelly Martin rounded out Bearcats in double figures with 10 points. Seven Bearcats recorded three or more rebounds and six were able to steal the ball at least once.
Five Truman players scored 10 or more points, led by Breanna Daniels with 13. Joya picked up the double-double with 12 points 11 rebounds.
Up Next: Northwest returns home Jan. 14 to host Central Missouri in a 5:30 p.m. game. The Jennies won a 66-62 contest against Nebraska-Omaha earlier today.
