Pair of Double-Doubles Pushes Bearcats Past William Jewell
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Two Bearcats posted double-doubles as Northwest defeated William Jewell 87-78 in the final game of the 2008 Winstead-Reeves Classic. The Bearcats (2-1) out-rebounded the Cardinals 46-29 and blocked six shots.
Northwest built a comfortable seven-point lead after six minutes at 14-7. Rickeya McElroy provided eight of those 14 points and accounted for half of the eight Bearcat rebounds by that time.
William Jewell mounted a six-point run beginning at the 10-minute mark of the first half to claim a one-point lead with 8:15 remaining, and expanded it to an eight-point lead by halftime.
The Bearcats tied the game with 15:49 remaining at 49-49, but couldn't take the lead until McElroy used a pass from Meghan Brue to score two points on a fast-break layup at 11:26. A 9-1 Northwest run beginning with six minutes remaining provided a six-point lead three minutes later as the Bearcats held for 87-78 victory.
McElroy recorded season-highs with 22 points and 12 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double and made five of the six Northwest blocks. Brue made 17 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, made three assists and recorded three steals in a career-best 38-minute performance. Both players were named to the Winstead-Reeves All-Classic Team.
Jessica Burton made 21 points and went six-of-six from the free-throw line. Micaela Uriell led all players with four assists and three Bearcats - Burton, Brue and Tara Roach - had three steals.
