Brue Scores 30 Points As Northwest Falls to Evangel 80-71
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Meghan Brue made a career-best 11 field goals and led both teams with 30 points as Northwest dropped an 80-71 decision tonight in the home-opener at the Winstead-Reeves Classic.
The Crusaders used a 16-9 run to take a 40-28 lead with 1:11 remaining in the first half. Brianna Mingue scored 11 of her 13 points by the break and shot three-of-six from behind the arc.
A fast-break three-pointer by Brue with 1:16 remaining in the game cut the Crusader lead to three. But the Bearcats were forced to resort to fouling and Evangel made seven of its final eight attempts from the free-throw line for the 80-71 win. The win will not count in Evangel's overall record, as NAIA guidelines permit Evangel to use up to two games against non-NAIA teams as exhibition contests.
Brue finished 11-of-19 from the field in her largest offensive output since 31 points against Missouri Western Jan. 3, 2007. Amber Vandevender scored seven points and made a game-high six assists as Shelly Martin led all players with four steals.
Evangel had five players with 10 or more points, led by Caitlin Russell and Ashlee Luko with 16 apiece. Tag Morris made 12 rebounds, all on the defensive end, to lead all players.
Up Next: Northwest hosts William Jewell Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in the concluding game of the Winstead-Reeves Classic. The Cardinals lost to 62-59 to Briar Cliff earlier tonight after tying the game late with 51 seconds remaining.
