Bearcat Women Start Season at South Dakota
MARYVILLE, Mo. - After facing a Division I team in exhibition last Saturday, the Bearcats open the season with a team in its first year moving to Division I when they travel to Vermillion, S.D., to face South Dakota at the Vermillion High School Gym Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. The game site was moved because the football field will still be down in the DakotaDome for the home finale next weekend.
Northwest is receiving a vote in the USA Today/ESPN WBCA Top 25 Coaches' Preseason Poll released Nov. 5 and was picked to finish third in the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll released Oct. 28.
Meghan Brue returns as the lone starter from last season's squad and is 125 points shy of becoming the 22nd Bearcat in program history with 1,000 career points. Jessica Burton, Amber Vandevender and Micaela Uriell also return and will be joined by freshman Tara Roach in the projected starting lineup for Saturday.
The Coyotes also return just one starter from last season's Division II runner-up team. Senior Bridget Yoerger averaged 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds last season for the former-NCC's top defensive unit. South Dakota is under the direction of new Head Coach Ryun Williams, who spent the previous 10 seasons at Wayne State College and went 181-105.
Gene Steinmeyer begins his 24th season and 10th at Northwest nine wins short of career victory No. 500. He's 8-1 in season-openers at Northwest, with the only loss coming at North Dakota Nov. 15, 2004.
