MARYVILLE, Mo. - A season-opening matchup with the defending Division II runner-up kicks off the 2008-09 Northwest Missouri State women's basketball schedule, announced Oct. 1 by head coach Gene Steinmeyer.

Northwest finished 18-14 in 2008, won the MIAA tournament and advanced to the NCAA playoffs. Steinmeyer needs nine wins to reach career victory No. 500 as he begins his 10th season at Northwest and 25th of his career. He stands eighth among active Division II coaches in victories.

The Bearcats head to Illinois State for an exhibition game Nov. 8. The Redbirds advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament in 2008 after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and sharing the MVC regular-season title. It's the fourth straight year the two teams will meet in exhibition play.

A trip to South Dakota, the Division II runner-up and winners of 31 of its last 32 games, opens the regular season Nov. 15. The Coyotes finished 33-2 and won the North Central Conference regular season and tournament titles.

The Bearcats open at home with Evangel and William Jewell for the Winstead/Reeves Classic Nov. 21-22. William Jewell advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Evangel finished fifth in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with a 14-15 record.

Northwest travels to Missouri-St. Louis Nov. 26 for the first time since 1996 when the Tritons were MIAA members. The Bearcats return home to host Avila Nov. 29 for a 1:30 p.m. contest.

The MIAA schedule begins with a pair of NCAA tournament participants, beginning at Emporia State Dec. 3 and at Washburn Dec. 6. Conference newcomer Nebraska-Omaha welcomes the Bearcats to Sapp Fieldhouse Dec. 13.

The final nonconference game sends Northwest to Saint George, Utah, for a game at Dixie State Dec. 22. The Rebels finished third in the Pacific West Conference with 16-11. The Bearcats resume MIAA competition at home against Fort Hays State Dec. 29.

The MIAA tournament will be March 6-8 at Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. Both Northwest men and women swept the tournament title last season.
