Northwest 4-0 For Third Year in a Row
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest led by 16 points with less than seven minutes remaining and held on to beat Mary 69-67 Saturday at the Montana State-Billings Yellowjacket Classic. The Bearcats won both games at the event and improved to 4-0 overall. Northwest has won its first four games in each of the last three seasons.
Northwest led 38-29 at halftime and held a 64-48 advantage following a basket by Lauren Williams with 6:48 remaining. Northwest made one field goal down the stretch and Rachel Zimmer's jumper brought the Marauders within a point with 21 seconds remaining.
Northwest guard Alicia Bell was fouled and missed two free throws, but Kayla Rogers was called for an offensive foul on the other end with eight seconds left. Bell made 1-of-2 free throws to give Northwest a two-point lead, but another offensive foul halted Mary's attempt to tie it in the closing seconds.
The Bearcats got three 3-pointers and 15 points from Lauren Williams in the contest. Andrea Dill hit two 3's and chipped in 14. The Bearcats made a season-best 11 three-pointers while Mary was 3-for-14.
Jessica Burton finished one rebound shy of a double-double for the Bearcats. She finished with 10 points. Nicci Landdeck scored 19 points in the second half for St. Mary's and totaled 23 points to lead all scorers.
Up Next: Northwest hosts South Dakota at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bearcat Arena.
