Coach Steinmeyer Inks Three Recruits for 08-09
MARYVILLE -- Head coach Gene Steinmeyer had three women's basketball players sign national letters of intent to play Bearcat basketball next season in the early signing period. Melanie Barnes, Shelly Martin and Tara Roach will don Bearcat green in 2008.
Barnes, a native of Plattsburg, Mo., averaged 16.2 points per game, hitting 42 three-pointers her junior season. An all-district selection for three straight years, Barnes shot 36.7 percent from the field and 76.3 percent from the free-throw line last season.
"We have known about Melanie (Mel) for several years," said Steinmeyer. "She brings a toughness as well as ball handling to Northwest. Mel is also an excellent three-point shooter. She can be a tall point or a tough shooting guard."
Martin attends Westside High School located in Omaha, Neb. This will be her fourth consecutive year as a varsity player, being selected honorable mention all-state twice. Martin helped her team to the state championship in 2007, averaging 13.3 points per game and shooting 43.8 percent from the 3-point line.
"Shelly is a quick guard who can really shoot," said Steinmeyer. She has great range and an excellent three-point shot. Shelly also plays in a very tough league."
Roach rounds out Steinmeyer's early signing class. An Elkhorn, Neb., product, Roach averaged 12.9 points per game and 8.2 rebounds last season. She received first-team all-conference and honorable mention all-state honors and has been a three-year varsity letterwinner.
"Tara is a forward with the toughness and rebounding of a post player," said Steinmeyer. "She is versatile and very athletic."
The early signing period ends Nov. 15. The late signing period begins April 11, 2008, and ends May 16.
The Bearcats open their season Friday, Nov. 16, with a game against Evangel University. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
