Women Drop Exhibition Contest to Illinois State
NORMAL, Ill. - Northwest women's hoops team led for nearly the first five minutes against Illinois State, but two free throws by the Redbirds gave them an 11-9 lead en route to a 83-63 victory over the Bearcats.
A Mandi Schumacher layup with 11:35 left in the first half got the Bearcats within one at 17-16, but a 30-16 run to close out the half gave Illinois State a comfortable lead. At half, Meghan Brue led the way with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Schumacher chipped in six points and grabbed two defensive rebounds in the first half.
Defensively, the Bearcats struggled containing All-MVC guard Kristi Cirone who sliced up the Bearcats for 27 points. Shala Jackson chipped in another 16 points for the Redbirds.
Meghan Brue led Northwest with 17 points in 27 minutes of action and Jessica Burton tallied 12 points with a couple 3-pointers.
The Bearcats will open the regular season on Nov. 16 in the Winstead-Reeves Classic. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. versus Avila University.
NOTES: Head coach Gene Steinmeyer was absent to attend a memorial service ... The Bearcats shot 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe ... The 83 points is the least allowed to Illinois State in the three exhibition games.
