Five Score in Double-Digits in Win Against Griffons
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team held on for a 78-74 victory over rival-Missouri Western. A jumper with 20 seconds left by Andrea Dill gave Northwest its final score as Missouri Western missed two shots on the other end of the floor.
The win improves Northwest to 8-4 (3-0 MIAA) and drops Missouri Western to 6-5 (1-2 MIAA). It's the first time the Bearcats have started 3-0 in league play since the 2003-04 season.
In the first half the Bearcats shot 42.9 percent from the field, including a 5-for-6 performance with 10 points and three assists by Amber Vandevender. An 8-0 run gave Northwest a 17-10 lead, building their lead to 11 points with 9:30 left. The Griffons would closed out the half with a 12-2 run, tying the game at 35.
Northwest came out firing in the second half hitting a season-high eight 3-pointers, leading by as much as 12 points, 71-59. The Griffons would battle back with an 11-2 run of their own giving the Bearcats a slim three points lead, 73-70. Jessica Burton's three-point play with 1:55 left helped ensure another Bearcat victory.
Mandi Schumacher and Kelli Nelson paced Northwest with 15 points and Jessica Burton and Andrea Dill contributed 12 apiece. Schumacher snapped her streak of double-doubles, but grabbed six rebounds. Nelson knocked down five 3-pointers and is now 16-of-32 in conference play. Vandevender dished out a season-high eight assists.
The Bearcats will host No. 4 Washburn Saturday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first ranked opponent Northwest has faced this season.
