Hot Shooting Helps Bearcats Top Southwest Baptist
MARYVILLE -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team shot 52.1 percent in a 101-97 victory against Southwest Baptist to open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) conference play. Five Northwest players hit double-digits as Mandi Schumacher led the way with 23 points.
The victory improves Northwest to 6-4 overall (1-0 MIAA) and drops Southwest Baptist to 8-2 (0-1 MIAA).
Both teams shot at least 50 percent in the first half with the Lady Bearcats hitting 16-of-32 field goals and Northwest knocking down 20-of-37. Trailing 32-29, Northwest went on a 19-5 run to gain its biggest lead of the game, 48-37, on a Lindsey Bayer 3-pointer. The Bearcats entered the locker room with a 53-45 advantage.
In the second half, Northwest led for nearly the first 13 minutes, but 3-pointer by Erika Souza gave Southwest Baptist an 82-80 lead at the 7:30 mark. Kelli Nelson quickly countered with a 3-pointer as the lead would switch four more times. Jessica Burton's trey was the last lead change giving the Bearcats a 94-92 lead with 1:12 remaining.
Mandi Schumacher continued to play solid basketball hitting 11-of-14 field goals and grabbing 12 rebounds. It's the fourth straight game she has led the team in scoring and her second double-double this season. Kelli Nelson notched a season-high 22 points, tying a career-high six 3-pointers. Andrea Dill, Jessica Burton and Amber Vandevender all hit for double-digits.
Southwest Baptist had 92 of their 97 points come from five players, including 25 point performances by Erika Souza and Courtney Creed.
Its the third time this season the Bearcats have reached the 100-point plateau, the most in any season in 37 years of Bearcat basketball.
Northwest made a season-high 13 3-pointers, coming within one of the school record set by last years Bearcats.
The Bearcats will host Fort Hays State on Saturday, Jan. 5. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
