Second Half Hurts Bearcats Against South Dakota
MARYVILLE -- The Northwest women's basketball team went scoreless for nearly the first five minutes in a 79-56 loss to South Dakota. The Bearcats, now 4-1, shot 34.5 percent from the field and were outrebounded for the first time this season, 43-34.
In the first half, Northwest's defense helped them stay within reach of the Coyotes and took the lead, 25-23, on an Andrea Dill jumper with 4:25 remaining. Three lead changes would take place before South Dakota headed into the lockeroom with a 36-30 lead.
The Coyotes opened the second half on a 8-2 run that sparked a Northwest timeout. Lauren William's 3-pointer at the 16:03 mark cut the deficit to seven points, but South Dakota would not let the Bearcats get any closer. In the last seven minutes, the Coyotes hit 7-for-13 from the field and their final bucket gave them their largest lead.
Three Bearcats starters finished in double-digits as Megan Brue led the way with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Brue also grabbed seven rebounds in the loss, all on the defensive end. Andrea Dill finished with 11 points and Kelli Nelson added 10, hitting 4-of-4 free-throws.
Bridget Yoerger led the Coyotes with a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. South Dakota top scorer, Jeana Hoffman, poured in a game-high 21 points, hitting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Jenna Hoffman finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Northwest pulled down just nine offensive rebounds finishing the game with four second chance points. The Bearcats went to the free-throw line 11 times, a season-low. The first foul was not committed until 10:02 remaining in the first half.
The Bearcats have 10 days off before they travel to Russellville, Ark., to take on Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m.
