
MARYVILLE, Mo.—Evangel led by 17 points in the first half and fought off Briar Cliff’s second-half charge to earn its first win of the season, 60-56, at Northwest Missouri State’s Winstead-Reeves Classic Saturday.
The Lady Crusaders led 39-26 at halftime and trailed just once in the contest. Briar Cliff cut the lead to four with two-and-a-half minutes remaining and to 58-56 with 10 seconds left. Melissa Hogan knocked down two free throws to seal the win.
Katie Burger scored 12 of her team-high 14 points in the first half for Evangel. Caitlin Russell added nine points for the Lady Crusaders. Michelle Determan and Carly Hansen had 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Chargers.
Evangel shot better than 60 percent in the first half and led 23-7 midway through the first half. A shot in the lane by Burger gave the Lady Crusaders their largest lead, 31-14, with five minutes left in the first half.
Briar Cliff opened the second half with a 12-5 run and got within six on a jumper by Jamee Phipps with 12 minutes remaining. The Crusaders cut the lead to four with less than a minute left, but Evangel made 7-of-9 free throws down the stretch.
