Nelson Sets 3-Point Record in Loss to Truman

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team was beat at the buzzer for the second time in three games as the Truman Bulldogs beat the Bearcats 84-82 Wednesday at Pershing Arena.

The Bearcats (10-6, 5-2 MIAA) tied the game at 82 on a Mandi Schumacher layup with 27 seconds remaining, but Julia Montebello drove and banked in a shot over the outstretched arms of Jessica Burton with four tenths of a second remaining.

Truman's sister tandem of Candace and Carmen McGee scored more than half of the Bulldogs' points. Candace set an MIAA record with nine 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 31 points. Carmen hit two 3's and finished with 13.

Northwest countered the sisters by getting 17 steals, forcing 25 turnovers and committing just two turnovers in the second half. Kelli Nelson hit four 3-pointers for the Bearcats, becoming the program's all-time leading 3-point shooter with 165 treys. She surpassed Laura Freiderich's career mark set in 2006.

Mandi Schumacher scored 18 points and finished one rebound shy of her 13th career double-double. She also held the MIAA's leading scorer, Georgia Mueller, to 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting. Mueller came into the contest averaging 21.9 points per game.

The Bearcats trailed 13-9 five minutes into the ball game, but countered Truman's start with a 12-0 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes. Nelson's 3-pointer at 11:32 capped the run and tied the career record. Northwest forced six turnovers, while Truman missed seven straight shots during the 12-0 run.

Truman would take the lead 34-33 heading into the lockerroom, outscoring the Bearcats 12-3 the last four minutes of the half. The Bulldogs hit 5-of-6 from the field to close the half.

The Bulldogs would extend their lead to to 11 points, 54-43, early in the second half, but Northwest would battle back.

An April Miller jumper sparked a Bulldog timeout and got Northwest within four, 54-50, with 11:36 remaining. Following the timeout, Lauren Williams added another field goal to cap the Bearcats 9-0 run.

The Bearcats added another 9-0 run to take the lead, 61-58, but a 3-point play by Mueller would tie the game at 61 with just under seven minutes remaining.

The score would knot up seven more times and the lead would change three times before the game-winning shot by Truman.

Lauren Williams, who scored a career-high 26 points at Truman last year, came off the bench and got 17 points for the Bearcats Wednesday. She set another career high by earning six steals. Jessica Burton had five steals and eight points. Nelson finished with 14 points and dished out a season-high six assists.
