Bearcats Take Down Tigers

MARYVILLE -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team grabbed its second straight conference win with a 67-50 victory over Fort Hays State. Mandi Schumacher paced the Bearcats, recording her third straight double-double with 21 points and 11 boards.

Northwest improves to 7-4 and 2-0 in the MIAA, while Fort Hays drops to 6-5 and 0-2.

The Tigers scored first, but Northwest countered with a 17-2 run and never let Fort Hays get any closer than four points. Kelli Nelson knocked down her first four 3-pointers, finishing with 17 points on 6-of-14 from the field. Northwest led 34-25 at half, holding Fort Hays to just eight field goals.

The Bearcats led by as many as 19 points in the second half, shooting 45.8 percent from the field. Northwest did not allow many scoring opportunities for Fort Hays, allowing nine offensive rebounds and four second-chance points to the Tigers.

Amber Vandevender dished out a season-high six assists and Lauren Williams helped Northwest on the boards, grabbing seven rebounds. Nelson recorded seven steals, one shy of her career-high, moving her into third all-time in Northwest history.

The Bearcats' pesky defense shut out Tigers' leading scorer Naomi Bancroft and held Fort Hays to just 17 field goals.

The Bearcats will go on the road to take on rival Missouri Western Wednesday, Jan. 9. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
