Bearcats Advance to MIAA Semifinals with 77-54 Victory over Missouri Southern
KANSAS CITY - ( stats) No. 4 seed Northwest Missouri State women's basketball advanced to its first MIAA Tournament Semifinal appearance since 2004 with a 77-54 over No. 5 seed Missouri Southern in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City this afternoon.
Northwest improves to 18-10 overall. Missouri Southern ends its season 14-13 overall.
"We had a slow start," commented head coach Gene Steinmeyer. "It was a much better combination at the end of the game."
The Bearcats opened up a 9-5 lead three minutes into the game off junior forward Lauren Williams' second three-pointer of the contest. The Lions answered back with a 7-0 run, fueled with five points from Tynesha Pierce.
Northwest strung together a 13-3 run to take the lead for good, sparked by a three-pointer from senior guard Katie O'Grady at the 13:31 mark of the first period.
By the end of the first half, all Northwest players had scored, ending the stanza with a 46-34 lead. The Bearcats held advantages in all shooting categories, lead with 51.6-percent (16-of-31) from the field and 43.8-percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arch.
Northwest maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, committing only one turnover throughout the final 20 minutes. Missouri Southern only had four possessions in the final five minutes to allow Northwest to end the game on an 8-2 run courtesy of four Bearcat offensive rebounds.
O'Grady led the Bearcats with 14 points, shooting four-of-nine from the three-point line. Junior guard April Miller set career-highs with eight assists and five steals to lead Northwest in both categories. Miller led the team with nine rebounds, tying her career-high.
Pierce led both teams with 20 points, and was one short of the double-double with nine rebounds for the Lions.
The Bearcats will play again March 3 against No. 1 seed Missouri Western. The Griffons defeated Pittsburg State 86-66 earlier today. Tip-off from Municipal Auditorium is set for 6 p.m.
