Bearcats Claim 94-77 Victory Over Fort Hays

MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( stats) The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team scored a school record 14 three-pointers to claim a 94-77 victory over Fort Hays State in the regular season finale in Bearcat Arena.

Northwest ends the regular season 17-10 overall and 10-8 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). Fort Hays ends its 2007 season 14-13 and 5-13 in MIAA action.

The Bearcats started the game with three consecutive treys, led off by junior forward Lauren Williams with the first two. Junior forward Mandi Schumacher sparked a 13-2 Northwest run with a jumper with 14:26 remaining in the half to allow the Bearcats to take a 32-15 lead midway through the half.

Northwest held a 53-37 advantage at intermission in the largest scoring half this season during conference play. Northwest gathered 10 of the game's 14 three-pointers by halftime, shooting 66.7-percent from beyond the arc.

Fort Hays forced seven Bearcat turnovers to start the half, preventing a Northwest field goal throughout the opening four and one-half minutes to pull within two at 53-51. The Tigers narrowed the lead to one twice, the latest with 12:26 remaining, before Northwest put together a 9-0 run to regain a 10-point lead with just over 11 minutes left.

A free throw from Ashlee Gustin with 10:22 pulled the Tigers within nine. A layup from sophomore guard Meghan Brue pushed the Northwest lead to 11 at the 9:30 mark. Fort Hays never reached a single-digit deficit the remaining of the game.

Senior guard Katie O'Grady scored a career and game-high 24 points in her last game at Bearcat Arena to lead Northwest. Brue grabbed seven boards and contributed 20 points.

Gustin led Fort Hays with 23 points and recorded a game-high eight rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds. Katie Rausch and Katie Klug scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, for Tigers in double-digits.

The Bearcats enter the conference tournament next week as the No. 4 seed, facing No. 5 seed Missouri Southern. Tipoff from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., is set for Friday, March 2 at 2:15 p.m. The Lions defeated MIAA regular season champions Missouri Western 75-69 in Joplin, Mo., tonight.

NOTES: Brue moved alone into first place on the season free throws made with 120 this season … O'Grady scored 18 of her points off of three-pointers, setting a new career-high … The Bearcats ended the night shooting 54.5-percent (30-of-55) from the field and 58.3-percent (14-of-24) from beyond the arc - both season highs … The 94 points were the most in conference play this season and the most since scoring 95 against Montana State-Billings on Nov. 30, 2006.
