Northwest Sweeps Season Series with Missouri Southern in 62-51 Victory
MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( stats) Sophomore guard Meghan Brue led Northwest with 14 points and tied the school single-season free throws record (116 made), going six-of-eight from the charity stripe, to assist the Bearcats in a 62-51 victory over Missouri Southern this afternoon. The Bearcats sweep the season series after defeating the Lions 66-61 in Joplin, Mo., on Jan. 10.
The Bearcats improve to 16-9 overall and 9-7 in the MIAA. The Lions drop to 12-12 for the season and 5-11 in conference play.
Neither team scored a field goal for the opening two minutes until junior Mandi Schumacher scored on a layup to put Northwest up 4-0. An 11-2 run sparked by two straight three-pointers from junior guard Kelli Nelson gave the Bearcats a 17-6 led with 12:40 remaining in the period.
The Bearcats scored 35 by the intermission, the most since tallying 42 against Truman State at home on Jan. 17. Northwest shot 41.7-percent (10-of-24) from the field, including 35.7-percent (5-of-14) from beyond the arc.
After halftime, Northwest held Missouri Southern scoreless for the opening five minutes before allowing a layup from Tynesha Pierce with 14:54 remaining in the game. The Bearcats opened a 16-point advantage with a jumper from sophomore guard Meghan Brue with 4:47 remaining. The Lions brought it back within eight with 30 seconds remaining, but wouldn't get any closer before time expired.
Brue led Northwest with 14 points. Junior forward Lauren Williams led the Bearcats with five rebounds. Williams and Schumacher also contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Pierce got the double-double with a game-leading 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions.
Northwest will close out the regular season road schedule with a trip to Missouri Western on Feb. 21. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
NOTES: Brue tied Annie Coy who made 116 free throws in the 1997-98 season ... Northwest remains undefeated this season (6-0) when allowing under 60 points ... Northwest has won the last five games against the Lions played at Bearcat Arena ... The Bearcats are sixth in the latest NCAA South Central Region rankings released Feb. 14.
