Womens Hoops Cannot Overcome Jennies run in 80-69 Loss
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - ( stats) The Northwest Missouri State womens basketball team could not overcome a 25-0 run by the University of Central Missouri in a 80-69 defeat. The Bearcats posted a 25-19 lead after a three-point play by sophomore guard Meghan Brue with 6:55 left in the first half. Northwest then went scoreless for nearly 10 minutes, including 11 missed field goals and six turnovers, as the Jennies took a 44-25 lead early in the second half. Northwest cut the margin to seven, 72-65, with 1:12 left, but could not get any closer as the Jennies hit eight free throws down the stretch.
Junior guard Kelli Nelson scored 10 of the first 20 points, finishing with 21 on 4-of-7 shooting from the 3-point line. Brue also chipped in 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, a team-high. Junior forward Lauren Williams was the only other Bearcat in double-digits with 11 points.
Five Jennies finished with at least 12 points led by junior guard Lindsey Maple's 21 points. Seniors Meghan Fromm, who scored 12 of the first 16 Jennies points, and Katie Battle each contributed 16 in the win. Battle posted a double-double grabbing 15 boards to go along with her 16 points.
Northwest shot 40.9 (27-66) from the field, snapping a seven game streak of below 40 percent. Each team shot horrid from the 3-point mark as the Jennies hit 3-of-19 and the Bearcats 5-of-21. The Jennies outrebounded the Bearcats 43-31.
The loss move Northwest to .500 (4-4) in the MIAA and 11-6 overall.
Northwest will travel to Emporia State Wednesday, Jan. 24 for a 5:30 p.m. match-up before hosting Southwest Baptist on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m.
Northwest won the first contest versus SBU, 93-83 on Dec. 9, in overtime thanks to 30 points from Nelson.
