Bearcat Women Snap Two-Game Skid with 66-61 Win Over Missouri Southern
JOPLIN, Mo. - ( stats) The Northwest Missouri State womens basketball team snapped a two-game skid with a 66-61 win versus Missouri Southern State in conference play. Northwest scored 27 points off of 30 Lion turnovers. The 30 forced turnovers is the most the Bearcats have forced since Saint Martins had 30 on Nov. 24. Northwest led by as much as 14 points in the second half, but a late 11-2 run by Southern got them within a single point with 14 seconds left after a 3-pointer by freshman guard Karina Kuczynski.
The Bearcats were led by junior post Mandi Schumacher's 15 points, 13 coming in the second half, and junior guard Kelli Nelson's 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Nelson hit two free throws in the late seconds to ensure a Bearcat victory. Senior guard Katie O'Grady chipped in 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Another starter, junior forward Lauren Williams, topped the Bearcat boards with nine in 35 minutes of play. Sophomore guard Jessica Burton had eight points in the first half before leaving with an ankle injury.
Missouri Southern was also led by all starters. Junior center Fatai Hala'Api'Api scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a double-double performance. Two other Lions, junior guard Robin Kantin and Kuczynski, contributed 10 and 11 points respectively.
Northwest shot a dismal 15.8 (3-18) percent from beyond the arc but shot 81 17-21 percent from the charity stripe.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak in Joplin and gives the Bearcats a 5-8 overall record at Missouri Southern. It is the first home loss the Lions have suffered this season as they were 8-0 coming into the contest.
Northwest notches its tenth win of the season and sits 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA.
Northwest will take on Pittsburg State this Saturday in Bearcat Arena at 1:30 p.m
