Bearcat Women Can't Get by #8 Western
MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( stats) The Northwest Missouri State womens basketball team could not get past the #8 ranked Missouri Western Griffons losing 72-69. The Bearcats led by as much as nine points early in the game, 24-15, after a Kelli Nelson layup with 5:02 left in the first half. However, Western cut the the lead by six points and trailed by just three going into the lockerroom, 31-28. With just 45 seconds left in the second half the Ashleigh Curry hit a three pointer to give the Griffons a 67-64 lead.
Sophomore guard Meghan Brue tied a school record with a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line en route to a career-high 31 points. It is the second time this year a Bearcat eclipsed the 30-point mark as Kelli Nelson hauled in 30 points against Southwest Baptist on Dec. 9 this season. Brue also led Northwest on the boards with 11 rebounds recording her first career double-double. Only one other Northwest player hit double-digits with Mandi Shumacher chipped in 12 points.
The Griffons were led by last week MIAA's Player of the Week Inga Buzoka who had 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 2-0f-4 from beyond the arc.
There were a total of 16 lead changes and 10 tied scores in the contest.
Northwest shot below 40 percent for the eighth time this season shooting 37.7 percent on 23-of-61.
The Bearcats suffer their first conference loss and now sit 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
