Women's Hoops Goes to 9-2 on the Year After a 70-62 Win at Fort Hays
HAYS, Kan . - ( stats) Northwest Missouri State held Fort Hays (Kan.) State without a field goal for over a 7-minute stretch in the second half en route to a 70-62 victory at Gross Memorial Colisium in conference action this evening. During that time, Northwest turned a 46-42 lead into a 54-44 advantage at the 10:23 mark. Junior Lauren Williams and sophomore Meghan Brue each notched a game-best 18 points for the Bearcats.
Northwest improves to 9-2 on the year and 2-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association while Fort Hays drops to 8-2 and 0-2 in league action. The home loss for the Lady Tigers was their first this year in seven games.
A triple by senior Katie O'Grady sparked a 16-7 half-ending run for the Bearcats. In the final 9:34 of the half, Northwest climbed back from a five-point hole to take a 37-33 lead at intermission.
The first half was played close with seven lead changes. However, the second stanza was a different story as the guest Bearcats slowly increased their margin and never trailed in the final 20 minutes. Northwest forced 10 second-half turnovers and held leading scorer Ashlee Gustin to just four points after the half.
Junior Mandi Schumacher grabbed 10 boards to go along with six points - it was her fourth game of double-digit rebounds this season.
For FHSU, Sheena Kuntzsch had a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Gustin netted 17 points overall and grabbed eight caroms.
Both teams struggled from the field with Northwest shooting slightly better, 32 percent to 30 percent. The Bearcats held a 16-point advantage from the charity stripe as Brue hit 11-of-13 freebies.
Northwest next takes on #12 Missouri Western on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Bearcat Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. as part of the doubleheader with the men.
