Women's Basketball Suffers Defeat at the Hands of #23 South Dakota 75-48
VERMILLION, S.D. - ( stats) The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team could not shake off a cold 30 percent (16-of-54) shooting effort in non-conference action and lost a 75-48 decision at #23 South Dakota tonight in the DakotaDome. Conversely, South Dakota, winners of six straight and 10 of 11 to start the season, hit a sizzling 59 percent in the first half and finished at 46 percent.
Northwest led just once, 4-3, after a lay-up by junior Lauren Williams. Bridget Yoerger's lay-up with 9:04 left in the first half put the hosts up 29-12 and finished an 11-2 Coyote run. The USD margin expanded to 44-21 at the half. The second frame was not any better for the Bearcats as they could not get any closer than the halftime score.
Junior Meghan Brue was the lone Bearcat in double figures with 10 points and she finished with a team-high six rebounds and three steals.
South Dakota's Bridget Yoerger netted a game-best 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She was followed in the scoring column by Jeana Hoffman with 11 points.
As a team, Northwest shot just 2-of-19 (10.5%) from three-point land and had 22 turnovers. USD held a 45-32 rebounding edge.
Northwest (8-2, 1-0 MIAA) will next get back into conference action by traveling to newcomer Fort Hays State on Saturday, Dec. 30 with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
