Women Hoops Win Conference Opener in Overtime
BOLIVAR, Mo. - ( stats) The Northwest Missouri State womens basketball team came from behind in its conference opener winning 93-83 against Southwest Baptist in overtime. The Bearcats trailed at halftime, 40-35, for the first time this year. A 10-0 run late in the second half helped Northwest put the game into overtime. The Bearcats outscored Southwest Baptist 19-9 in the overtime getting eight points from junior Mandi Schumacher. Northwest outrebounded Southwest by 15 recording 47 compared to 32.
Junior guard Kelli Nelson poured in 30 points, a career best, shooting 9-of-15 from field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. It is the first time a Bearcat has scored 30 points or more since Jenna Wolfe scored 35 against California State on Dec. 20, 2002. Four other Bearcat players entered double-digits with Schumacher adding 19 points and sophomore Meghan Brue hitting for 14. Brue tied a career best with nine rebounds leading Northwest on the boards for the first time this season.
Northwest stands 8-1 (1-0 MIAA) after the second overtime contest of the season. The only loss of the year came in the other overtime game against Western Washington on Nov. 25. The Bearcats have 11 days off and do not play until Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. in South Dakota.
