Northwest Women Gain Best Start Since 2003-04 with 79-51 Win Over William Penn
MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( stats) The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team opened the season 5-1, the best start since the 2003-04 season, beating William Penn 79-51. A 17-6 run to close the first half and a 19-2 run to open the second half provided a 33-point lead, putting the Lady Statesmen away, with 14:44 left in the game. Every Bearcat player recorded nearly 20 minutes of court time in the blowout win.
Junior forward Lauren Williams nearly notched her third double-double of the season posting nine points and 11 rebounds and had a team-high five steals. Junior guard Kelli Nelson topped the point's charts with 19, hitting 5-of-11 from the 3-point line and 6-of-14 from the field. Senior guard Katie O'Grady chipped in 13 points and dished out three assists. Every Bearcat player scored in the game for the third time this season.
Meaghan Price was the only double-digit scorer for William Penn as she poured in 10 points. The Lady Statesmen had 28 turnovers compared to the Bearcats 13. William Penn shot a dismal 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free throw line.
Northwest will take on Montana-State Billings Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in Bearcat Arena. The Bearcats open conference play Dec. 9 at Southwest Baptist at 5:30 p.m.
