Bearcats Sweep in Winstead-Reeves Classic beating Missouri Valley
MARYVILLE, Mo. - (stats) The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team got off a shaky start against Missouri Valley when the Vikings got off to an early 8-0 lead as junior starters Lauren Williams and Mandi Schumacher were on the bench with two fouls. The bench showed it strength tonight scoring 38 points in the 76-44 victory. Northwest went into halftime with a slim five-point lead, but exploded in the second half outscoring Missouri Valley 43-16 and holding the Vikings to 17.6 percent (6-of-34) shooting.
Sophomore Meghan Brue came off the bench to score a career high 26 points hitting a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe and 4-of-5 from the 3-point line. She also tied for a team-high eight rebounds with junior Ashley Baker. Junior Mandi Shumacher was the only other Bearcats in double digits scoring 14 points in only 16 minutes. Foul trouble kept Schumacher on the bench much of the night. Every Bearcat scored in the win.
Brue was selected to the Winstead-Reeves All-Classic Team and Schumacher received the tournament MVP. Laniya Stevens (Harris-Stowe), Chanel Ross (Harris-Stowe), Megan Gariss (Ozark Christian), and Bonnie Johnson (Missouri Valley) rounded out the Winstead-Reeves All-Classic team.
Northwest travels to Western Washington for the Lynda Goodrich Classic over the Thanksgiving break. They play St. Martins on Friday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. and Western Washington on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
