Northwest Women Move to 8-3 With Win Over Park
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team stayed undefeated at home with a 71-53 win over Park University tonight.
The Bearcats forced Park into a 0-for-10 first half from behind the arc and only a seven-of-32 from the field. One of Park's seven shots made came after two minutes into the game, which was its only lead of the night.
Northwest would go onto take the lead for good with 15:22 to go in the half on a jumper by senior Meghan Blay (Shawnee, Kan.). The Pirates would get as close as three points, but the Bearcats would increase their lead by as many as 16 in the half.
To open up the second half, Northwest would go on a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 22 on a three point field goal by sophomore Kalena Kenney (Stockton, Mo.). However, Park would go on a 12-0 run that was sparked by Meghan Cummings.
After the run by Park neither team went on a large run, as the Bearcats would go on the largest run with 9:53 left on the clock at 5-0.
Overall shooting for both teams, Park was 18-of-73 and Northwest was 28-of-77 from the field. The Bearcats held the Pirates to 1-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc, while Northwest went nine-of-21.
The Bearcats were led by senior Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.), who had a team high 14 points. However, sophomore Mandi Schumacher (Columbus, Neb.) pulled down a career and team-high 13 rebounds and scored 10 points. Sophomore Kelli Nelson (Exira, Iowa) was the other Bearcat to score in double figures with 11 points.
Northwest now improves 8-3 on the season, while Park goes to 6-10. The Bearcats will will open up MIAA action on Saturday, Dec. 31 against No. 14 Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
