Northwest Wins a Thriller 70-67 over Missouri Southern
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team was victorious this afternoon over Missouri Southern in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action, 70-67.
The Bearcats used a combined 55 points from senior Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.), who led the team with 20, followed by sophomore Kelli Nelson (Exira, Iowa) with 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Fellow classmate Mandi Schumacher (Columbus, Neb.) had her fourth double-double of the season, as she grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and scored 12 points. Rounding out the double figures was senior Meghan Blay (Shawnee, Kan.), who scored 10 points, but hit the shot to ice the victory for the Bearcats with 10 seconds left.
In the first half, Missouri Southern had its largest lead of four (33-29) late in the half, but an 11-0 for the Bearcats to end the first stanza gave them a lead at the break 40-33.
With 12:56 left in the first half, Friederich became the all-time leader at Northwest in career 3-pointers made, passing Amanda Winter, who made 155. Friederich now has 157 for her career as ended the game four-of-six from outside.
To start the second half, Northwest got the lead up to eight (42-34) on a jumper by Blay, but a small 5-2 run gave the Lions a 50-49 advantage midway through the half. The Bearcats would answer the call, as they went on an 11-0 run to go up 60-50.
Missouri Southern would battle back to bring the Northwest lead down to one (68-67) with 38 seconds left on a 3-point bucket by Marina Caran. But the before mentioned Blay nailed the jumper to give the Bearcats the 3-point win.
Northwest is now 14-10 in the overall and 6-7 in the conference, while Missouri Southern falls to 14-10 and 6-7 in the MIAA. The Bearcats will get back into action on Wednesday against Missouri Western in St. Joseph at 5:30 p.m.
