Northwest Falls to Central Missouri 77-68
MARYVILLE, Mo. - A 30-12 run in the first half sealed the deal for Central Missouri this evening at Bearcat Arena over the Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team, 77-68.
However, the Bearcats opened up the second stanza with a 16-6 run and got the game to six twice (50-44 and 52-46) but could not capitalize. The Jennies got their lead back up over double digits twice on a 9-4 run and again later in the second half on a 5-1 run.
For the game, Northwest shot 43 percent from the field, 40 percent from outside and 44 percent from the free throw line. Central Missouri hit 42 percent from the field, 59 percent from beyond the 3-point line and 66 percent from charity stripe.
Individually for Northwest, sophomore Kelli Nelson (Exira, Iowa) had a team-high 17 points, followed up by senior Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.), who had 14, sophomore Mandi Schumacher (Columbus, Neb.) chimed in 12 and rounding out the double figures was senior Meghan Blay (Shawnee, Kan.) with 10 points.
Central Missouri's Lindsey Maple had game-high 22 points and shot six-of-seven from beyond the arc.
The Bearcats fall to 12-8 overall and 4-5 in the MIAA, while the Jennies improve to 12-7 and 5-4 in the conference. The Bearcats will get back into action on Wednesday, against Truman at 5:30 p.m.
NOTES: Nelson scored 15 points in the first half and only hit one bucket in the second half, while Schumacher scored two in the first stanza and finished the game with 12 points. Friederich hit two 3-point buckets this evening to bring her career total up 147 and eight away from moving into a first place for the all-time record.
