Bearcats Run Away in Second Half With 74-49 Win at Upper Iowa
FAYETTE, Iowa- Northwest Missouri State women's basketball started slow but used a 22-5 run to close out the first half and secure a 74-49 win at Upper Iowa University tonight in nonconference action. The game was the first for Northwest in 11 days.
Northwest, who picked up its fourth win of 10-plus points, improves to 6-2 overall. Upper Iowa falls to 2-8 on the year.
Without the inside services of sophomore Chelsea Ernzen (flu) and junior Katie O'Grady (back), Northwest turned up its defense after falling behind early. Ashley Martin hit a three-pointer for the Peacocks to give the hosts a 16-12 lead with 12:31 left in the first half. From there, Northwest forced 11 turnovers and, after a trey by sophomore Kelli Nelson, sophomore Mandi Schumacher scored seven straight points to ignite the Northwest offense.
A layup by Christa Hammel broke nearly a five-minute scoreless streak for Upper Iowa, but by that point Northwest built a 22-18 edge and took a 34-21 lead into the locker room.
Senior Laura Friederich, who finished one point shy of a personal-high with 24 points, hit a jumper to cap a 6-0 spurt out of the half. At that point, Northwest led 40-21 and never looked back. Upper Iowa never could cut the deficit under 15 points the rest of the way.
Schumacher finished with 14 points and six rebounds while Nelson went for 10 points on three trifectas. For Upper Iowa, Hammel compiled a team-best 18 points and 10 rebounds along with four blocks.
Sophomore Lauren Williams got her first career start and finished with two points, three rebounds and two steals. Friederich, who has scored in double figures in all four of her games this season, is the team's leading scorer at 17.0 points.
Both teams struggled overall from the field as Northwest was 27-of-75 (.360) while UIU was 20-of-51 (.392). The Bearcats held a 16-6 edge scoring from the foul line.
Northwest heads to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Hoop N' Surf Classic with games on Dec. 20-21. The Bearcats take on Northeastern (Okla.) State on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CST followed by a date with No. 13 Valdosta State (Ga.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST.
