Exhibition Game Won by Illinois State
NORMAL, Ill. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team lost 93-58 against Division I member Illinois State this afternoon in the first exhibition contest for Northwest. The Bearcats played from behind in the second half, after being down by 17 at the break 46-29.
In the first half, the Bearcats shot just 37 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc. Northwest was out rebounded as well in the first half, with Illinois State cleaning up the glass 28-12. Northwest was unable to get second chance shots in the first 20 minutes only collecting two offensive rebounds. Conversely, ISU compiled 10 second-chance opportunities and grabbed 18 defensive rebounds.
Offensively, Northwest was led by senior Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.) in the first half with six points, shooting three-of-six from the field. Friederich left the game early in the second with an injury and did not return.
Illinois State shot 52 percent from the field in the game, keeping its same total it had in the first stanza. Northwest shot 37 percent from the field overall, going 22-of-58 from the field.
The turnovers stayed consistent, as Illinois State won the battle 19-22. The Redbirds only committed nine turnovers in the second, while the Bearcats turned the ball over 13 times.
For the game, Northwest was led by sophomore Mandi Schumacher (Columbus, Neb.), who chipped in with 11 points and grabbed three rebounds. Fellow classmate Megan Hamilton (Newalla, Okla.) scored nine and dished the ball off twice.
The Bearcats open up 2005-06 regular season action in the Ryland Milner Centennial Classic on Tuesday as they host William Penn (Iowa) at 5:30 p.m.
