Northwest Defeats Nebraska-Omaha, 67-65
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State ended up on top of today's match-up at Nebraska-Omaha with a score of 67-65. Behind at halftime, the 'Cats rallied back to win marking their third come-back win of the season. The win also extends Northwest's winning streak to six.
The Mavericks took the lead to begin the game and kept it through nine minutes until Kelli Nelson picked up a steal and a layup to push the Bearcats ahead 16-14. The advantage was exchanged three times during the first half and rested with UNO at the half, 39-34.
Northwest made only 13 of 41 shots from the field during the first half while Nebraska-Omaha took advantage of second chances, putting in 15 points from offensive rebounds.
The second half was dominated by the Mavericks as they went ahead of the Bearcats by 13 points twice before the 'Cats went on a 13-2 run to close the gap to 57-55. UNO held on with 1:39 left in the game but a layup by Ashely Poptanycz and a steal and layup by Meghan Blay at the buzzer gave Northwest the upper hand and ended the game 67-65.
The difference between the two halves for the 'Cats was their field-goal percentage. They recovered to shoot 14 of 29 in the second half (48.3 percent) to end the game just over 38 percent.
Poptanycz scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her third double-double this season. Mandi Schummacher came off the bench for the Bearcats to lead the team with 16 points. Blay helped the team in more ways than one with five assists and nine points. Laura Friederich put up 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
The Mavericks were led in scoring by Karen Theis with 21 points, followed by J.J. Smith with 15 points.
Northwest improved its record to 6-3 while Nebraksa-Omaha fell to 5-4.
The Bearcats will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Hoop-N-Surf Classic on Sun., Dec. 19 and Mon., Dec. 20. They will play Harding on Sun. at 9:00 a.m. (1:00 p.m. cst) and West Texas A&M on Mon. at the same time.
