Northwest Extends Winning Streak to Three
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- After losing the first three games of the season, Northwest Missouri State has turned its team around with three successive wins, the latest being an 84-65 victory over Park to end the Holiday Tournament.
The Bearcats showed their defensive prowess once again by forcing 19 Pirate turnovers, pulling down 52 of the 93 rebounds and picking 13 steals from Park.
Northwest's bench scored a combined 31 points helped along by Megan Hamilton's four three-pointers. Over a quarter of the team's 84 points were scored by Junior Laura Friederich with 22 total, one more than this season's individual game high.
The 'Cats are an even 3-3 on the season while Park fell to 3-7.
Northwest dominated most of the first half, giving up the lead for only three minutes. Jumpers by Katie O'Grady and Mandi Schumacher and a trey by Meghan Brue pulled the 'Cats to 31-25 with 3:55 left in the half. The lead was kept by the Bearcats for the remainder of the game.
Northwest led by 23 points with 1:56 left in the game after two steals by Friederich, both leading to baskets by Chelsea Ernzen and Friederich.
Senior Ashely Poptanycz added 11 points, game high five steals and seven rebounds for the Bearcats.
Katie Cummings had team high 14 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates.
The 'Cats out shot their opponent from the field (41.6 percent) and from the three point range (47.8 percent). Park was 23 for 62 from the field (37.1 percent) and only three for 12 from beyond the arc.
Northwest will show up at Bearcat Arena once again ready to play on Tues., Dec. 30 against Rockhurst at 7:00 p.m.
