Northwest Closes Ryland Milner with Loss to SW Minnesota St.
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- After taking the lead three times against Southwest Minnesota State in the second half, Northwest Missouri State relinquished the 81-70 victory to close out the Ryland Milner Classic.
The 'Cats took the lead for the first time late in the first half with six minutes to go. The lead went back and forth until the Mustangs pulled ahead with 8:25 left in the game. A three-pointer and a jumper by Meghan Brue brought the score to 75-68 with less than a minute to go but SMSU answered back with four made free throws and a layup added by Kelly Crimi to end the game.
The Mustangs shot an amazing 53.6 percent from the field while the 'Cats shot a respectable 34.7 percent. Northwest shot 64.3 percent from beyond the arc. Defense has been the Bearcats' strong suit this year as they recorded nine steals and forced 19 Mustang turnovers.
Laura Friederich led Northwest in points with her second 21-point game in two days. Friederich was named to the Ryland Milner Classic All-Tournament Team. Ashely Poptanycz pulled down 13 rebounds and 15 points for her first double-double on the season. Meghan Brue added 13 points and three steals.
Kristin Hairston had 23 points for the Mustangs and Michelle Bruns added 20 points and eight rebounds. Bruns was voted the Tournament MVP of the 2004 Ryland Milner Classic.
The Bearcats fall to 0-3 on the season and Southwest Minnesota St. improves to 3-0.
Northwest continues their home stand with a game against William Penn Tues., Nov. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
