Northwest's Katie O'Grady Named Winstead-Reeves Classic MVP
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team is on its first winning streak of the season, as they defeated Mount Mercy 79-48 in the final game of the Winstead-Reeves Classic.
For the second day in a row the Bearcats came out on fire jumping out to a 20-9 lead, which was sparked by a 9-2 run. Of the 20 points scored by Northwest, sophomore Mandi Schumacher (Columbus, Neb.) chipped in with five.
The Bearcat defense held Mount Mercy without a point for nearly four minutes, until the Mustangs Kelli Dabroski hit the bucket. Another strong defensive stand by Northwest later in the half, again held Mount Mercy without a point for almost seven minutes.
The defense held Mount Mercy to 7-of-23 from the field in the first stanza, 15 turnovers and the Bearcats stole the ball 10 times.
The Northwest defense was not the only shining spot in the first half, the offense shot 53 percent going 17-of-32. The Bearcats were led at the break by Schumacher, who had 11 points.
In the second half, Mount Mercy got the lead down to 16, but the Bearcats went on a 13-0 run to take their largest lead of the night by 29 on a layup by Schumacher.
Northwest also led by junior and Winsted-Reeves Classic MVP Katie O'Grady (Falls City, Neb.), who had a game high 15 points along with Schumacher.
Other Bearcat notables are junior Talesha Dokes (N. Little Rock, Ark.), who came off the bench to score her Northwest career high 11 points. Sophomore Kelli Nelson (Exira, Iowa) scored five points, but had six steals and five rebounds.
The Bearcats will now a take a couple days off before the head down to Texas, to play nationally recognized Abilene Christian on Wednesday Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. Three days later, Northwest will head up to St. Paul, Mn. to play another nationally recognized team, Concordia-St. Paul at 4 p.m. Saturday.
