2005-2006 Women's Basketball Schedule Released
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- ( complete schedule) The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team has announced its 2005-2006 schedule. The Bearcats will tip-off their season with three home games, the first being the Ryland Milner Centennial Classic against William Penn on Nov. 15. The Ryland Milner Centennial Classic will preceed the men's game at 7:30 against St. Mary's. Originally called the Ryland Milnar Tournament, the name has been changed to the Ryland Milner Centennial Classic in conjunction with Northwest's centennial celebration.
Northwest will then host the inaugural Winstead-Reeves Classic on Nov. 18 and 19. The Winstead-Reeves Classic is named after former women's basketball coaches Sherri Reeves and Wayne Winstead, who combined for 372 wins in 24 seasons at Northwest. The Bearcats will play Winnona State (Minn.) on Nov. 18 and Mt. Mercy (Iowa) on Nov. 19.
"I thought it was appropriate to name it after the two people who nurtured women's basketball since it began here." head coach Gene Steinmeyer said. "That is why we named it after Wayne Winstead and Sherri Reeves."
Northwest will then hit the road for three games, traveling first to Abilene Christian University (Tex.) on Nov. 23, then to Concordia-St. Paul University (Minn.) Nov. 26. The Bearcats will then finish the road trip against the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Dec. 1, which is a member of the Mid-Continent Conference and NCAA Divsion I.
The highlight of the women's basketball schedule is the Hoop N Surf Classic in Honolulu. The Bearcats will play Northeastern State University (OK.) and Salem International University (WV.) on Dec. 20 and 21.
The Bearcats will also play William Jewell on Dec. 5 at home and then go to Upper Iowa on Dec. 16. Northwest will then warp up the non-conference portion of its schedule against Park University on Dec. 29.
On New Year's Eve, Northwest will open the MIAA portion of the schedule on the road against Central Missouri. The Bearcats home MIAA schedule will feature Division II National Champion Washburn on Feb. 22 and South Central Regional runner-up Emporia State on Jan. 18.
The post-season will start on March 2 when the MIAA Tournament begins in Kansas City with the top eight seeds advansing. The tournament will conclude on March 4 and 5.
