'Cats Defeat Missouri-Rolla 92-66 in Final Regular Season Game; Play at 6 p.m. on Thursday in MIAA Quarterfinals
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team used a 18-4 run, which ate up the final 8:35 of the first half, and cruised to a 92-66 victory over Missouri-Rolla this afternoon on Senior Day in Bearcat Arena. Lone Northwest senior Ashely Poptanycz recorded her team-leading seventh double-double on the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Northwest, who snapped a four-game overall skid, improved to 13-16 overall and 6-12 in the MIAA. The Lady Miners dropped to 9-17 overall and 3-15 in league action.
After Northwest opened up a 16-8 lead at the 13:42 mark, Rolla countered with a 15-10 spurt to come within three at 26-23. However, the 'Cats held the guests scoreless for 6:36 late in the half notching 13 consecutive points to take a 39-23 advantage. The Bearcats held the momentum and led 44-27 at intermission.
That double-digit lead was never threatened as the Bearcats used the support of a season-high crowd of 1,423 and a 45-33 rebounding edge to nail down their 13th win of the year.
The Bearcats shot 45.6 (31-of-68) from the floor including 10-of-28 (.357) from beyond the arc. The 10 treys is one shy of the school's single game mark set twice earlier this season. Also, Northwest held a 20-13 scoring edge from the foul line and forced UMR into 19 turnovers.
Freshman Megan Hamilton scored a game-high 18 points on four three-pointers. Junior Laura Friederich and freshman Mandi Schumacher added 17 apiece. Schumacher missed a double-double with nine boards.
The Lady Miners received 14 points from Tiffani Rhodes and 13 from Nicole Dierking.
This afternoon's contest marked the final meeting between the two programs in the MIAA setting. UMR will join the Great Lakes Valley Conference beginning in 2005-06.
Northwest awaits the announcement later tonight on who it will play at the MIAA Tournament on Thursday. The Bearcats will be the No. 7 seed and play at 6:00 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. Three MIAA games later today have a bearing on who Northwest will play.
