Missouri Western Defeats Northwest, 84-70
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -The Missouri Western State women's basketball team used a 17-6 run at the end of the first half and a dominant second half to propel them to an 84-70 victory over Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats posted a strong effort through the first 14 minutes of play but gave up the lead with 5:08 left in the first half at 27-25 and never regained it.
Northwest fell to 12-16 overall and 5-12 in the MIAA while Missouri Western improved to 19-7 overall and 11-6 in conference play.
Northwest broke out to an 11-4 lead to start the game and kept the Griffons at bay for 14 minutes but a steal and layup by Missouri Western's Eldra Paixao pushed the Griffons ahead, 27-25. Missouri Western went on 17-6 run in last seven minutes to close out the half at 40-31 to its advantage.
The rebounding in the first segment was weighted towards the Griffons with a 23-17 edge but Northwest turned the ball over one less time than Missouri Western (7-8).
The final 20 minutes were dominated by the Griffons as they made 50.8 percent of their shots (31-61), 11-of-24 from behind the arc and 11 free throws. The 'Cats made 37.1 percent of their field goals (26-70), 28.0 percent of their threes (7-25) and 11 of 17 free throws. The Bearcats were out-rebounded 41 to 36. The game was Northwest's 21st game to have fewer turnovers than its opponent (18-12) and 19th game to have more steals than its foes (7-6).
Laura Friederich led the scoring campaign for the 'Cats with 12 points as well as pulling down eight rebounds. Eldra Paixao had game-high 18 points while Selma Barbosa recorded a double-double for the Griffons with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
All but one Bearcat scored versus the Griffons and all but two players grabbed at least one rebound.
Northwest will play its last regular season game at home on Sat., Feb. 26 at 1:30 p.m. versus Missouri-Rolla. Saturday's game marks Missouri-Rolla's last game in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
